Location information
- Name
- Former Okuni Family House
- Address
- Wakecho, Okayama Prefecture
- Description
- This grand traditional residence conveys the lifestyle of a wealthy landowner who prospered in the sake brewing business during the Edo period (1603–1868). The main house was built in 1760, and the kura-style reception hall was added in 1801.
The two-story main house features two parallel east–west thatched irimoya roofs, connected by a ridge set at a right angle. The kura reception hall is constructed in a gabled style with hon-gawara tiled roofing. With room layouts reflecting social rank and many original Edo-period fittings still intact, the residence presents a distinctive example of historic Japanese domestic architecture.
