Location information
- Name
- Eboshi coal mine ruins
- Address
- Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture
- Description
- Built in 1897 by Amakusa Tangyo Co., Ltd., this site preserves the remains of an undersea coal mine at Eboshise, opposite the west coast of Gesu Island.
Even after mining operations ceased, the arched red-brick mine entrance—said to have been bonded with a mixture of red clay and pine resin—has remarkably endured for more than 110 years, surviving countless typhoons and powerful waves. Its preservation to this day makes it an exceptionally rare sight.
The view of the sun setting beyond the Eboshi Pit is also celebrated as one of Japan’s Top 100 Sunset Views.
