Location information
- Name
- The Former Gorin Church
- Address
- Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture
- Description
- Originally built in 1881, the former Hamawaki Church was dismantled in 1931 and reconstructed in the Gorin district where it stands today as the Gorin Church. In 1985 it was almost dismantled, but a decision was made to preserve it. It is a unique architecture, with its exterior looking Japanese except for the pointed arch shape of the windows and its interior looking like an authentic western style church. It is the second oldest church after the Oura Church as a church built in the early Meiji Period. Considered historically important for displaying the architecture style of that period, it was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1999. The church, as a part of “Villages on Hisaka Island,” was also inscribed as a component of Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region which became a World Heritage Site in 2018.
