- Description
- Ryosen Temple was the center of Sangaku Buddhism (spiritual practices connected with sacred mountains) from the Heian Period until the middle ages. It is said this temple was established by Tanyo Shonin in 709 as the temple for Empress Genmei. As a sacred site blessed with magnificent mountain views, this temple was also the training ground of several famous monks. Ryosen Temple was one of the most renowned temples in Kyushu but only Otogo Hodo, which was built in the Edo Period, remains today. It is also known as the birthplace of Japanese tea tree cultivation, due to the belief that the monk Eisai brought tea tree seeds back with him from China and planted them in a garden of Sekijobo, situated in the valley to the west of Ryosen Temple, and began teaching tea production techniques.
