- Description
- Inasa Shrine is an old shrine, and while its actual age is unknown, it is recorded in Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku (The True History of Three Reigns of Japan) that the shrine was received by a lower 5th rank priest in the year 861, then by an upper 5th rank priest in 885. As well as worshipping the generations of Nabeshima domain lords, there is also a furyu dance performed here to pray for good harvest. Every year on October 19th, the autumn festival is held, and a Yabusame archer shoots an arrow on horseback. This custom is believed to have been begun by the steward of a neighboring village. The Inasa Shrine area is a sacred syncretization of Shinto with Buddhism called Inasasan Taiheiji, and there are many relics of Buddhism culture scattered here and there such as the 16 Rakan statues carved from stone at Tomyo Temple. Inside the precinct are two large camphor laurel trees over 600 years old and both of these are designated as natural monuments of Saga prefecture. A bonfire festival is held in late December.
