Name: Tsubaichi Kannondo Shrine

Description: Markets were held in the old days. They no longer take place, but the word ‘market’ (ichi) remained in the name of the shrine. It is a place where young men and women used to exchange love through ‘Utagaki’ (exchange of poems and songs). The area flourished as a lodging district for those who came to visit Hasedera Temple. The name of the shrine appears both in Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji) and Makura no Soshi (The Pillow Book).
