- Description
- The Esashi Jinku Festival, originating from the Hibuse Fire Prevention Festival in the Iwayado district of Esashi, Oshu City, has been held since 1974 as a celebration involving the entire local community.
On May 3rd and 4th each year, the “Toshi-iwai-ren” groups—men aged 42 and 25 in their Yakudoshi years (a traditional Japanese belief that certain ages are considered unlucky and require rituals or celebrations to ward off misfortune)—perform creative dances and the Esashi Jinku Dance, recognized by Guinness World Records as the Largest Fan Dance.
The festivities also include a colorful procession of neighborhood floats, the dynamic Hyakushika Daigunbu (Hundred-Deer Grand Dance) with about 100 performers, and the “Esashi Jinku Grand Parade” featuring around 1,000 dancers, filling the city with vibrant energy over the course of two days.
