- Description
- The Former Goto Residence is a prime example of the Sugo-ya, a straight-line floor plan farmhouse style common in the Date domain, in contrast to the Magariya (L-shaped farmhouses) typical of the Nanbu domain. Estimated to have been built during the Genroku era (1688–1703), it stands as one of the oldest surviving farmhouses in Japan. Inside, a wide doma (earthen-floored space) occupies nearly half the structure, featuring a unique construction method in which paired pillars separate the roles of the upper and lower framework. This rare technique and the building’s historical significance led to its designation as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
