- Tokoji Temple was founded in 1362 as part of the Rinzai School of Buddhism. It is said to have then been rebuilt from ruins in the later 17th century after being destroyed in the war. Since that time the temple has been part of the Soto sect.
In 1859 the 15th resident priest, Dorin, commissioned a famous stone craftsman of the time to begin sculpting the Five Hundred Arhats in order to help the local people in a period of drought. A total of 521 arhat statues were sculpted over a period of 24 years and completed in 1883.
