- Tanjoji Temple was built in 1193 on the site of the birthplace of Honen Shonin, the founder of Jodo sect of Buddhism. In fact, the famous ancient gingko tree is said to have been planted by the Honen Shonin himself by sticking his cane, made of gingko tree, into the ground upside-down. The Miei-do (Main Hall) and the temple gate have been designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
