- Description
- The Inaba Kaidō was a historic route connecting Tottori (Inaba) and Himeji (Harima). For centuries, it served not only as a corridor for economic, cultural, and political exchange, but at times also played a role in military movements.
In the center of Furumachi—once a thriving post town along the route—the remains of both a Honjin (the principal inn for feudal lords and official travelers) and a Waki‑honjin (a secondary inn) still survive. The Honjin, with features such as its sukiya-style ceremonial gate, preserves the appearance of roughly 200 years ago and is considered exceptionally rare.
The townscape largely consists of traditional machiya townhouses dating from the late Edo Period (1800–1867) through the Meiji (1868–1912) and Taisho (1912–1926) eras, maintaining the atmosphere of a historic post town. Many houses have notably wide frontages, giving the streets a spacious, relaxed character.
In 1986, the area was designated a Townscape Preservation District by the prefecture.
