- Ushimado has long prospered as a port where ships waited for favorable winds and tides. The town still retains many traces of its past, preserving the atmosphere of a bustling port from the Edo Period (1603–1867) through the mid‑Showa era (1926–1989).
Historic buildings and sites are scattered throughout the area, including Honrenji Temple with its three‑storied pagoda, the remains of the Ochaya residence once owned by a prominent Meiji‑period figure, white‑walled storehouses, lattice‑front townhouses, the former Chugoku Bank building, and the remains of Toro‑do Hall.
Because the area has not been heavily developed for tourism, it maintains an authentic charm that reflects the everyday life of a traditional port town.
