- Ushimado, historically thriving as a port where sailors awaited favorable winds and tides, retains many remnants from the Edo period (1603–1868) to around 1955, when it flourished as a port town. The area is home to traditional buildings and historical sites, including Honden-ji Temple with its three-story pagoda, the ruins of a Meiji period (1868–1912) influential figure's residence (Ochaya), white-walled storehouses, lattice doors, the former Chugoku Bank, and the site of a lantern hall. Ushimado remains relatively undeveloped for tourism, preserving its authentic atmosphere of everyday port town life.
