- Description
- Kinojo Castle (or Ki Castle), which literally means a “demon castle,” is an ancient castle constructed in the late 7th century by the Yamato Imperial Court. A stone wall about 2.8 kilometers long and some earthworks are all that remain from the original castle. The size and structure of the ruins, however, suggest the castle was one of Japan’s largest at the time. The ruins which stand on top of a steep mountain about 400 meters high has been designated a Natural Monument of Japan. Kinojo Castle is also known as the setting for the famous folk tale “Momotaro.”
