- Description
- One of several temples established by the order of Emperor Shomu in the Nara period (8th century). It is estimated that the original temple site was 160 meters wide and 178 meters long, but the buildings were burned down in the 14th century. The current building was reconstructed in the Edo Period. The towering five-storied pagoda in the temple precinct stands at 34.32 meters high. The site of the temple has been designated an Historic Site of Japan, and the pagoda has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
