Location information
- Name
- Fukiya Furusato Village
- Address
- Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture
- Description
- Once a flourishing town thanks to copper mining, this mountain village was famous as a major producer of vivid red “Bengara” color pigment made from oxidized iron. The uniqueness of Fukiya is that the town was built under a unified concept through discussions among wealthy business owners. Heads of shrine carpenters were specifically invited from Shimane Prefecture for the work. It was designated as Okayama Prefecture’s Furusato Village in 1974 and designated as Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 1977.
