- Gesshoji Temple is the family temple of the Matsudaira clan. Nine lords are buried here, each grave fronted by an ornate gate. The "monster tortoise of Gessho-ji," as described by Lafcadio Hearn, is a giant statue of a tortoise in front of the sixth lord's grave, carrying a huge stone block on its back. Gesshoji temple is also known as the temple of hydrangeas.
