- Description
- Machiya Monogatari-kan is a machiya (townhouse) building located in Tosenji-cho in the southeastern part of the central city area of Yamato Koriyama. The barn and storehouse were built in 1923, and the main building and tatami room wing in 1924. It was a three-story wooden building, which was rare at that time, and became a dominant building as a brothel, but was closed down in 1958. After that, it was used as a boarding house and the guest rooms were rented out. Even now, the building still reminds us of the prosperity of the upper class flower district of those days. The interior of the building, with its solid structure, has been well preserved, and special architectural techniques such as elaborately designed transoms and high-quality sukiya-style small rooms have been incorporated throughout the building to create the beauty of form that is unique to the brothel architecture. It was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2014.
