- Address
- Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture
- Description
- Established in 1878, this is Japan's oldest trout hatchery. Located in the national scenic area of Samegai Valley, the 3-hectare facility takes full advantage of its natural surroundings. It features 84 breeding ponds and rivers of various sizes filled with abundant spring water, where around 2 million fish, including rainbow trout, amago, iwana, and biwa trout, swim. The facility also raises the elusive "ito" fish, ancient species like the "sturgeon," and the clear-stream icon, "hariyo." Many tourists visit to enjoy the seasonal beauty: cherry blossoms in spring, water and fish interactions in summer, autumn foliage, and snow-covered scenery in winter. The facility is managed by Shiga Prefecture (Shiga Prefectural Fisheries Experiment Station).
