- With a history spanning more than 1,100 years, Aburahi Shrine has been venerated by many people for a long time. During Sengoku Period (age of warlords) in the 15th and 16th centuries, the shrine was worshipped by many Koka Bushi (=samurais) as a shrine dedicated to the deity of war. Today, companies that are related to oil (‘abura’ in Japanese) place their faith in the shrine, due to its name. The shrine’s Tower gate, East cloister, West cloister, Worship Hall, and Main Hall are all designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The umbrella pine tree, thought to be over 700 years old, has been designated as a Natural Monument of Shiga Prefecture.
