- Description
- Hyakusaiji Temple is a "mountain castle" style temple belonging to the Tendai sect of Buddhism, surrounded by heavy walls of stone. One of the oldest temples in Omi, it was built partway up Mt. Oshitateyama by Prince Shotoku in 606 in order to welcome visitors from the kingdom of Baekje ("Hyakusai" in Japanese) in South Korea, and was modeled after their own Ryoun-ji Temple.
