Location information
- Name
- Miyoshibashi Bridge
- Address
- Kaniecho, Aichi Prefecture
- Description
- This is a rare lifting bridge, distinguished by its bright red color and triangular truss columns, which are part of its lifting mechanism. The bridge is raised only during the Sunari Festival when Makiharabune (bundled straw boats) and Danjiri-bune (decorated festival boats) pass through.
The name Miyoshi Pine and Miyoshi Bridge is said to originate from the presence of pine trees in the area in the past and the belief that the deity Omiyoshi-sama (the god of reeds) often became entangled in their roots. The bridge was completed in 1983. The Sunari Festival was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset by the Japanese government in 2012 and was further registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.
