- Description
- Hyoko Lake, designated a National Natural Monument as a wintering site for swans, is an irrigation reservoir originally created during the Edo period (1603–1867).
The site gained national attention when the late Shigesaburo Yoshikawa became the first person in Japan to successfully feed wild swans here.
In 2008, Hyoko was registered as a Ramsar Wetland, and its habitat for waterfowl is carefully protected.
Each year, swans arrive from early October to late March, with peak numbers in late November, when 5,000 to 6,000 birds gather. The species observed here include the Tundra Swan and the Whooper Swan.
In spring, the lakeshore is encircled by pale pink Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, while bright yellow forsythia blooms nearby, creating a vivid and picturesque seasonal landscape.
