Location information
- Name
- Uramakikata Gorge
- Address
- Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture
- Description
- This area features a breathtaking gorge that stretches for 6 kilometers. The Isazawa River, originating from the northern side of Mount Makihatayama—one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains—has sculpted the landscape into towering cliffs that rise several hundred meters on both banks, resembling folding screens.
With its deep V-shaped valley and striking terrain formed by massive boulders, this site has been designated as the Uramakihata Gorge Natural Environment Conservation Area by Niigata Prefecture. Walking paths allow visitors to observe numerous waterfalls, including Meoto Falls, as well as a variety of mountain wildflowers, with the sound of cascading water continuously echoing through the rocks.
