- Flowing through the heart of Nagaoka and dividing the city into eastern and western districts, the Shinano River once played an important role as a transportation route, while also causing frequent flooding. The first bridge built across the river was Chōseibashi, completed in 1876.
The present bridge, finished in 1937, is the third generation and is known for its striking geometric design.
