Location information
- Name
- Watanabe Family's Residence
- Address
- Sekikawamura, Niigata Prefecture
- Description
- This is the former residence of a prosperous farmer who gained wealth through shipping, sake brewing, and new land development, and provided financial support to the Yonezawa domain until the end of the Edo period (1853–1868).
The property spans approximately 3,000 tsubo (about 9,900 square meters), surrounded by a moat, with a 500-tsubo (about 1,650 square meters) mansion featuring a gabled wooden roof made of thatch and stone. Constructed using 15,000 stones, it is the largest of its kind in Japan.
Inside, carefully selected pillars, round beams, and flooring are generously incorporated, offering a glimpse into the architectural layout of one of the few remaining wealthy farmers' homes. Additionally, the garden has been designated as a national scenic site.
