Description: In Ishizumimachi, Numata City—home to the Ishizumi Terraced Rice Fields—an aging and declining population led to a rise in abandoned farmland and vacant houses. In 2018, a project was launched to restore the terraces.

Through an owner-lease program for unused fields, 36 groups now cultivate the rice paddies, revitalizing both the landscape and its natural ecosystem. Fireflies have returned in great numbers, lighting up the summer nights once again.
