- Hotttainotaki Waterfall
- Address
- Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture
- Description
- This impressive waterfall extends roughly 100 meters in length and plunges 57 meters, earning designation as both a Scenic Site and Natural Monument of Akita Prefecture, as well as inclusion among Japan’s “Top 100 Waterfalls.”
Formed when lava from an eruption of Mount Chokai around 100,000 years ago blocked the river’s flow, the water now cascades across the rock in a rare formation that appears to run toward the mountain itself. The area is also recognized as a geosite where visitors can observe dramatic volcanic landforms, with seasonal scenery ranging from vibrant fresh greenery in spring to brilliant autumn foliage.
