Description: Along the Hitokabe River near the Former Hitokabe Elementary School, rows of cherry trees create a simple and tranquil landscape. “Hitokabe” is a historic town once thriving as a post town, and it is recorded that the young poet Kenji Miyazawa visited here twice. The name is said to derive from the legend that after Aterui was defeated by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro in 801, Hitokabemaru, the son of Ohtomaru and nephew of Aterui, fled to this area.
