- Description
- The Isawa Dam, located on the Isawa River of the Kitakami River system in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, serves multiple purposes: flood control, securing river flow for environmental conservation, supplying irrigation and municipal water, and power generation. Constructed to replace the Ishibuchi Dam—completed in 1953 and situated about two kilometers upstream—it was completed in 2013. With a height of 127 meters, a crest length of 723 meters, a volume of approximately 13.5 million cubic meters, and a total storage capacity of 143 million cubic meters, it is one of Japan’s largest central core-type rockfill dams.
The dam’s reservoir, Lake Oshu, covers a water surface area of about four square kilometers. Together with the Yakeishi Beach Line, a pristine beech forest surrounding the area, it offers a soothing natural landscape in every season.
Nearby, the Lake Oshu Exchange Hall features exhibits related to the Isawa Dam. In summer, visitors can enjoy rafting and other activities that take advantage of the surrounding natural environment.
