- Atago-yama Shrine

- 176 Atago, Isawa-Wakayanagi, Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, Japan
- Description
- Atago-yama Shrine, locally known as “Atago-sama,” stands atop a prominent iwakura (sacred rock) in Oshu’s Isawa area. Since the Edo period, it has been deeply revered as a deity protecting against fire and epidemics, cherished by the local community.
The shrine is tied to the legend of the “Birth of the Rock Mountain,” which tells how a giant named Miyoshi carried stones from the Ōu Mountains (Nishiyama) and, in a single night, built a mountain resembling Mount Fuji.
This tradition continues to be passed down, and the shrine’s simple yet solemn presence embodies both history and faith.
