- Called a “living fossil,” the Japanese giant salamander is the world’s largest amphibian with a body over 1-meter long. They became known after Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold shipped a Japanese giant salamander to Europe. They are nationally designated in Japan as a Special Natural Monument and with permission from the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Roadside Station Innai is currently raising a Japanese giant salamander which was found in a nearby waterway. The salamander is open to the public to promote environmental conservation.
