- Description
- The Mito Art Museum is located in the heart of Mito City. It is surrounded by a grass-covered urban square enclosed by zelkova and cascades, with a layout featuring a tower, entrance hall, theater, concert hall, and contemporary art gallery. Designed by Arata Isozaki, the Mito Art Museum has become a hub for music, theater, and art. The symbolic Art Tower commemorates the 100th anniversary of Mito city (built in 1989) and stands at a height of 100 meters, with the top of it, 86.4 meters high, serving as an observation deck. The fountain in front of the urban square is an impressive design, as water is poured onto a massive stone suspended by wires. The entrance hall offers a spacious, high-ceilinged atrium (7 meters wide, 12 meters deep, and 11 meters high) with a pipe organ installed in this space, known for its long reverberation time (the pipe organ has 46 stops and a total of 3,283 pipes). The museum shop, which is filled with art-related items including books and postcards, and a lounge space with a café complete the art museum.
